The portrait screen by the entrance of the radhaus shop, showing bikes from the live stock, today's weather in Lauingen and how far a bike would have ridden at 22 km/h since 0 o'clock today.
radhaus lauingen is my family's bike shop. right by the entrance hangs a 43-inch samsung screen in portrait mode. it has been there for years, but it could only show static files from a usb stick – every update meant making new files, copying them over and plugging the stick back in.
now the screen runs a custom web solution i built for it. instead of the usb stick, a raspberry pi is plugged into the screen and plays a loop of slides: bikes from the shop's website, the weather in lauingen, our opening hours, how a repair works and much more. new posters go up straight from the website's sanity studio.
the pi keeps itself up to date and recovers from errors on its own: it installs updates at night, restarts by itself if it ever hangs, and keeps playing the last loop when the network drops.
built with next.js, served from vercel and played by chromium on a raspberry pi 4.
